Managing biodiversity is an important component of Sustainable Forest Management. Australian Paper maintains regular discussion with certification bodies and provides feedback from stakeholders to our wood suppliers.
We work with managed regrowth wood supplier VicForests to ensure that Victoria’s uniquely diverse native forest fauna species are protected through the stringent management of commercial forestry practices.
VicForests values forest biodiversity and all operations comply with the legislative framework that governs sustainable timber harvesting in Victoria. The legislation requires the protection of threatened species and their habitat, including the Leadbeater’s Possum, listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List.
Australian Paper had input into the Leadbeater's Possum Advisory Group as an industry stakeholder.
In response to the Timber Industry Action Plan released in 2011, the Victorian government established the project 'A New Strategic Approach to Biodiversity Management' to provide a combined research and policy platform that will investigate opportunities for sustainable timber production while effectively managing biodiversity.
Our native regrowth supplier VicForests has committed to reducing the annual area of Ash forest harvested from 2017 by 25%, in addition to a 30% reduction already in place since the 2009 bushfires, and replaced traditional clearfell methods with retention harvesting methods in 50% of the area harvested across the Leadbetter's Possum habitat range from July 2014.
