Our Position
Australian Paper purchases wood fibres from independent
sustainable forest suppliers. We are increasing the auditing
of our suppliers to ensure that they are compliant with
our sustainability principles and we constantly review the
suppliers we work with.
The fibre used in Australian Paper's manufacturing
is sourced from sawmill residue, sustainably managed hardwood
forests, managed hardwood and softwood plantations, imported
pulp and waste paper. No fibre is sourced, either as timber
or pulp, from old growth forest.
Australian Paper acknowledges the importance
of plantation fibre and, as this resource becomes increasingly
available in Australia, we expect to significantly increase
the amount of plantation fibre used.
Our Performance
64% of fibre used at our largest
Mill (Maryvale) is derived from sources that are certified by the Forest
Stewardship Council (FSC). This is a worldwide scheme supported
by the World Wildlife Fund and Greenpeace. The remaining
fibre used at this Mill comes from recycled material or
timber owned by the State Government of Victoria. State-owned
timber will be certified under the Australian Forest Standard
by June 2006, providing independent assurance that this
timber is managed for long-term sustainability.
As a part of Maryvale's $258m expansion, the use of Native State Forest timber will be phased out by 2017 and no extra Native State Forest will be harvested as a result of this investment.

100% of Shoalhaven's fibre is purchased from off-site plantation sources.
All Tasmanian Eucalypt fibre is
sourced from ISO 14001 certified suppliers. Pine fibre is
sourced from ISO 14001 certified plantations.
Australian Paper purchases around
200,000 tonnes of pulp from a variety of countries within
the international market each year.
Imported pulps are used at all Australian
Paper Mills. In some cases, imported pulp is used to achieve
specific properties in the end product such as strength
or opacity. In other cases it is used to supplement our
own pulp production when demand for pulp exceeds pulping
capacity.
Imported pulp is only sourced from suppliers
with Environmental Management Systems certified to ISO 14001 or FSC certification and is Elemental
Chlorine Free (ECF).
Recycled products form a significant
part of our total product range, with recycled content between
10% and 100% depending on the intended use.
We are committed to proactively encouraging
suppliers to improve their environmental performance by insisting
they act in a legal and sustainable fashion and are committed
to continuous improvement.
