Elemental
Chlorine Free and Totally Chlorine Free
When paper is produced from wood it has discolourations
that occur due to tannins and lignins within the wood structure.
For most consumers these discolourations would be unacceptable
for printing purposes and must be removed by bleaching.
ECF pulps are bleached with a derivative of chlorine that
minimises any environmental impact. TCF pulp is bleached
without any chlorine.
Environmental
Management System
A systematic approach to address environmental issues within
a business. An EMS covers all facets of the operations and
all employees. It allocates resources and assigns responsibilities
and provides for the continual evaluation of practices,
procedures and processes.
EMAS
The Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, EMAS, is an environmental
policy tool devised by the European Commission for organisations
operating in the European Union and the European Economic
Area in a step towards the communityÕs goal of sustainable
development. The EMAS scheme was open for voluntary participation
by organisations from April 1995 and it aims to promote continuous
evaluation and improvements in the environmental performance
of participating organisations.

Forest Stewardship
Council
An international organisation promoting responsible forest
management. FSC has developed principles for forest management
which may be used for verifying the management of forest
holdings and a system of tracing, verifying and labeling
timber and wood products that originate from FSC certified
forests.
ISO 14001
The International Standardisation Organisation (ISO) developed
ISO 14001 as a global environmental management system that
can be used by an organisation to achieve environmental
performance goals. The ISO 14001 environmental management
system incorporates a "Plan, Do, Check, Act" model based
on an environmental policy that guides planning, implementation
and operation, checking and corrective action, and management
review processes.
Old Growth
Forest
Forest that is ecologically mature and has been subjected
to very little, if any, unnatural disturbance such as timber
harvesting, roading and clearing or natural disturbance
such as bush fire.

Plantations
Those areas planted to selected species (either hardwood
or softwood) specifically for timber and/or fibre production.
Recycled Fibre
Paper and board that has been collected
for re-use as raw fibre material in paper and board manufacture.
Renewable
Energy
Energy sources that can be replenished in a short period
of time. The five renewable sources used most often include
water, solar, wind, geothermal and biomass. Non-renewable
energy sources consume carbon or nuclear-based fuels.
Sustainable
Development
Development that meets the needs of the present without
compromising the needs of the future.
Sustainable
Forest Management
The integration of commercial and non-commercial values
of forests so that both the material and non-material welfare
of society is improved while ensuring that the values of
forests, both as a commercial resource and for conservation
purposes are not lost or degraded for current and future
generations.
