Paper
Making - Renewable Resources and Recyclable Products
Our mills in Victoria (Maryvale Mill), Tasmania (Wesley
Vae and Burnie Mills) and NSW (Shoalhaven Mill) produce
more than 980+ grades pf paper - from packaging and printing
papers to copy and bag papers. These papers are produced
from renewable resources and can be recycled.
Legal Compliance - The Bottom
Line
Each of our
Mills must comply with strict environmental requirements.
In addition to the Government's regulations, we have our
own Environmental Management Systems that are audited by
recognised independent world leaders in environmental auditing.
All four Mills have been certified to ISO 14001 since 2001 and must comply with strict environmental requirements. Our Tasmanian operations were the
first in the Asia Pacific pulp and paper industry to develop
an Environmental Management System
certified to ISO 14001 - the leading independent international
certification system.
Sustainable Fibre Sources
We purchase all wood fibres from
independent suppliers and use sawmill residue, plantation
fibre, imported pulp and waste paper or other recycled material
in the manufacture of our papers.
No fibre is sourced, either as timber
or pulp, from old growth forest.
Over 70,000 tonnes, of waste packaging material and papers are recycled at Australian Paper's operations each year.
Our Aquatic Environment
Each of our Mills invests significantly
in water conservation and wastewater management. All of
our Mills use less than their allocation of water with our
Tasmanian Mills using only 22% of their allocated water
supplies.
Maryvale Mill's water usage per
tonne of paper produced has reduced by 66% in the last 20
years. In 2003/4 a major upgrade of the water treatment process was undertaken with the aeration pond reconfigured, new aeration devices installed and an improved nutrient dosing plant built, resulting in the de-sludging 300,000m3 of accumulated sludge from over 25 years of opperation.
The Air That We Breathe
There has been a 17% reduction in
Carbon emissions from 1984 to 2004 at our Mills.
Overall, our operations achieved a high level of compliance towards our air emission licences in 2004/2005, with Tasmania and Shoalhaven reaching
100% and Maryvale 92.9%.
Using Energy Efficiently
We use a variety of power sources
including electricity, hydro-power and power manufactured
from our own operations. Over 65% of energy used at Australian Paper's operations is from renewable sources.
Our Mills have reduced their consumption
of electricity by more than 64% per tonne of paper produced
over the last 25 years.
Minimising Waste
We seek to reuse as much waste material
as possible in our operations.
Each year, in the manufacture of
our products we use more than 70,000 tonnes of waste paper
that would otherwise go to landfill.
Our People, Our Communities
We directly employ 1,828 people and
provide flow-on employment to more than 9,500 regional
Australians.
Each year we support more than 135
regional charities and community groups, including Conservation
Volunteers Australia and we encourage employees to participate
in these activities.
We have established Community Consultative
Committees in each of the regions in which we operate, to
better understand the communities around us and to facilitate
discussion.
