Our Position
Australian Paper operates manufacturing facilities within
strict legal requirements. We aim to have our operations
fully compliant at all times, in many ways, this is just
the bottom line. We are continuall y on the lookout
for ways to improve our performance.
In order to achieve this, we have established
operating parameters and procedures covering all aspects
of our manufacturing processes. These procedures and parameters
are detailed in site-specific Environmental Management Systems
(EMS).
Each EMS ensures that resources and responsibilities
are assigned to proactively manage environmental issues
within the site. There are more than 31 Australian Standards
and 11 Codes of Practice that cover environmental issues
relating to the manufacture of paper and they are addressed
within our Environmental Management Systems.
Performance against the EMS is assessed
by external auditors and the results of these assessments
are discussed with the Community Consultative Committee at
each site. In addition to the EMS, all of Australian PaperŐs
sites operate under detailed environmental licenses, issued
by State or Federal Government environmental protection agencies.

Our Performance
Over the last five years, our environmental
performance has consistently improved at each of our Mills,
achieving above 98% compliance in 2003/04. We are proud
of this performance and are committed to continually improving.
All our Mills have continuous environmental
improvement programs that have been developed in conjunction
with community groups, State Government environmental agencies
and site management.
All our Mills have world-class teams
of environmental professionals who direct our environmental
activities. All employees, from senior management to the
production floor staff, receive environmental training that
is tailored to the area they work in and updated on a regular
basis.
All four Mills have been certified to ISO 14001 standards since 2001 and must comply with strict environmental requirements. Our Tasmanian operations were the
first in the Asia/Pacific pulp and paper industry to develop
an Environmental Management System certified to the international
ISO14001 standard. Australian PaperŐs compliance with environmental
regulations and legal requirements is measured on an on-going
basis and reported every four months. The assessments are
verified by external auditors and include measurements of
noise, air, odour, oil recovery, water, landfill and recycling
activities.
