Australian Paper's Future Fibre Strategy

Australian Paper announced a comprehensive stakeholder engagement program in June 2011 as part of a review of our long term fibre sourcing strategy. The Future Fibre Strategy review was launched to examine all of Australian Paper's fibre sources with a focus on securing additional planation fibre.

An important component of the review was the stakeholder engagement process. Australian Paper has a wide range of stakeholders including Federal, State and Local Government, our customers, Environmental Non Government Organisations, suppliers, industry associations, unions, forest certification bodies and our employees. The objective was to use this engagement process to arrive at a strategy which optimises our economic, social and environmental sustainability.

The review also examined the potential for sourcing plantation wood from Western Victoria and included a detailed study of this option. Australian Paper has a 30 year planning window for fibre supply and the review reflected long term prospects for plantation timber, recycled fibre and managed regrowth state forests.

The Future Fibre Strategy was released in September 2011 and found that by exploring a wide range of plantation options and initiatives, Australian Paper expects to progressively lift our proportion of plantation and recycled fibre to three quarters of our total fibre mix. The review of Western Victoria by forest management experts Poyry found that there were significant barriers preventing a full transition to this resource. However we do plan to access some of the closest wood from Western Victoria as part of the overall strategy.

One of the key learnings from the Future Fibre Strategy has been the importance of consistent and ongoing stakeholder engagement for Australian Paper. We will continue to commit to this process into the future so that we can maintain our economic, social and environmental balance as a leading Australian manufacturer.
